Online Family Orientation - FAQs

As social distancing and on-campus space density recommendations continue, our priority remains the health and safety of our community. In order to reduce the spread of COVID-19, Family Orientation will be conducted fully online for summer 2021. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about Online Family Orientation. Program and Structure

Is Online Family Orientation required?
Online Family Orientation is optional but strongly recommended because it provides resources to help you help your student with a successful transition to UT Austin. 
Why is orientation being moved from an on-campus model to an online model?
Due to the ongoing challenges of COVID-19, the university has determined it is in the best interest of our incoming Longhorns, their parentsfamilies as well as our campus community to shift from the traditional on-campus orientation model to an online format for all sessions this summer.
Can parents/families join the Online Student Orientation program?
No, New Student Orientation programming is designed specifically for incoming student to begin independently acclimating to university processes and resources and to begin forming connections with their classmates. To learn more about New Student Orientation view their FAQs here.
How will the Online Family Orientation model be structured?
Online Family Orientation is a robust series of pre-recorded content from university leadership, faculty, students, staff and parent volunteers released in phases over a four-week period. This format  offers flexibility with work and home obligations while giving you information that help you help your student make a successful transition to the start of the fall semester . Do I need to take time off of work to participate in Online Family Orientation? 
Absolutely not! The university understands the many responsibilities you have to balance and has developed a flexible self-paced program for you. The program content is released over the span of four weeks and consists of pre-recorded content that can be watched at any time and at your own pace through Tuesday, August 24. Our intention when structuring Online Family Orientation was to create an environment similar to an online class where you can log in at any time, watch presentations, ask questions and reference handouts. We know your time is valuable and have set this program up to accommodate your scheduling needs. 
What digital platform will be used for the orientation program?
Each paid registrant will have their own unique log in access to Online Family Orientation content hosted on Canvas.

Registration and Cost

When will Online Family Orientation registration open?
Registration for Online Family Orientation opened Thursday, April 1.
What is the cost to participate in Online Family Orientation?
The cost to register for Online Family Orientation is $15 per person. Registrants will have their own unique log in access to all Online Family Orientation content.  
Can I receive a waiver for the registration charge?
No, Online Family Orientation registration cannot be waived.
I need to cancel my registration. May I get a refund? 
Registration charges are non-refundable, although exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis. If you need to cancel your registration, please let us know by replying to your registration confirmation email. 
Am I required to attend the same orientation session date as my student?
No, Online Family Orientation is structured on a different timeline than your student’s program.
I have completed the Online Family Orientation registration process but I have not received a confirmation email. 
Online Family Orientation registration confirmation emails are sent the following business day from the day you complete the registration transaction. If you have not received a regisatration confirmation email please check your junk/spam folder first, if you find the email there, we encourage you to mark the email as "Not Junk" in order to receive communication from us in the future. If you are still unable to locate your registration confirmation email, please email us or call our office at 512-471-2353 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. CT.)
I have completed the Online Family Orientation registration process but need to add an additional registrant. 
Please reply to your registration confirmation email with the name, email and relationship of the family member you’d like to add to your registration. Family Orientation staff will respond within one business day. Please do not submit a new entry to the registration system. 
I cannot access the Online Family Orientation Content.
In order to gain access to Orientation content you must be registered. Your unique log in information that allows you to gain access to our Online Family Orientation content is included in your registration confirmation email or your final details email. Each Friday, during Online Family Orientation, you will also receive the "Online Family Orientation Module Details" email which also includes your unique log in information. If you continue to have technical difficulties, please email us or call our office at 512-471-2353 (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. CT).

Will I be able to visit with my student’s advisor online?
No, academic advisors will be focused on introducing your student to the collegiate advising process and preparing your student to register for fall classes. If you have questions, review them with your student beforehand to include in their discussion with their advisor.
